Gender and crime

Gender patterns in crime:

  • ⅘ convicted offenders in England and Wales are male.
Some sociologists and criminologists argue that official statistics underestimate the number of females offending in comparison to males.

Chivalry thesis:
Pollak (1970) argues that criminal justice agents - such as police officers, magistrates and judges - are men, and men are socialised to act in a 'chivalrous' way towards women.
